NEWS: Anxious pets need home remedies this Bonfire Night

Remember, remember: the 5th of November is stressful every year for pets, but this year, especially, could have a major impact on our furry friends.

Pets are even more anxious this year than previously due to owners returning to work after spending so much time at home during the pandemic.

Worcestershire's Animal Welfare Officer, Pip Singleton, is urging residents not let off fireworks at home.

Pip, who works for Worcestershire Regulatory Services, said: "Nowadays, with such easy access to fireworks, Bonfire Night can drag on for weeks.

"Fireworks have become bigger, louder and brighter. A lot of our four-legged friends find them terrifying. This can result in our pets being extremely anxious.

"Organised events are more animal-friendly and are generally held within a week."

Here are some top tips for home remedies that will help your pets this firework season:

  • Keep pets indoors, close doors and windows.
  • If you are going out, leave the radio or television on low, so it will disguise the bangs
  • Make them a snuggly den out of blankets, creating a place for them to hide
  • Invest in toys that will occupy your pets such as lick matts or Kong's filled with goodies. Alternatively, scatter some treats around your home for pets to sniff out
  • Take dogs for walks and exercise horses in the daylight
  • Consider homeopathy remedies, plug-ins etc. to help relax your pet.
  • For more information, please visit the WRS website and social media pages.

Last chance to take part in Residents' Survey

Malvern Hills District Council is encouraging residents to take part in an annual survey before the deadline on Sunday.

The Residents' Survey, which ends at midnight on Sunday 31 October, gives people the chance to say what they think of their local area and services.

This year, the survey includes questions on how the Covid-19 pandemic has impacted residents, as well as the response and support provided by the council. It also asks questions about such issues as litter and homelessness.

More than 660 people have filled in the survey since it was launched on 3 October and the council is hoping even more people will take part.

Feedback will be used to improve services and the ongoing recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic. A summary of the results will be published anonymously on the council website.

The survey takes about 15 to 20 minutes to complete but progress can be saved so it can be completed in stages.

Cllr Sarah Rouse, Leader of Malvern Hills District Council, said: "We want as many people as possible to take part in this year's Residents' Survey and the deadline is fast approaching. This feedback will be invaluable for us and will help us to make improvements where needed."

Please visit www.malvernhills.gov.uk/consultations to take part.

Pumpkin trail comes to Upton

A spooky pumpkin trail is all set to arrive in Upton next week as part of the half term Halloween celebrations.

The free pumpkin trail, hosted by Upton upon Severn Tourist Information Centre (TIC), will take place on Friday 29 October and Saturday 30 October.

There will be 15 pumpkins with ghoulish faces hiding around the town, where children will be able to follow the trail to pick up the letters and win a prize.

Trail sheets can be collected from the TIC at the Pepperpot from 10am on 29 October and completed answer sheets returned by 5pm on 30 October to collect a prize.

Fancy dressed is encouraged, but not essential.

Cllr Daniel Walton, Portfolio Holder for Tourism and Economic Development at Malvern Hills District Council, said: "We are really happy to be hosting this Halloween trail which is something fun that the whole family can enjoy. It is the first ever pumpkin trail we have held in Upton and the town centre is a perfect location for this kind of activity."
